That frigid autumn night in Burlington, Vt., was not the first time I had stared down the barrel of a gun. Half a world away, in the West Bank, it had happened before. On a hot day in May 2021, a classmate and I, both of us 17 at the time, were protesting near a checkpoint in Ramallah. But I had never expected to feel this on a quiet street in Vermont, on a stroll before Thanksgiving dinner. The shooting of three Palestinian Americans in Burlington has received more sustained coverage than any single act of violence against Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank since Oct. 7.

A 48-year-old Vermont man was charged on Monday with three counts of attempted second-degree murder in the weekend shootings of three young men of Palestinian descent on a Burlington street, a violent episode that stunned the small city. The suspect, Jason J. Eaton, was held without bail pending a bail hearing. He appeared in court through a remote video link from jail, wearing a red prison shirt. He did not speak during the brief hearing, except to thank the judge. Prosecutors did not offer details of their investigation at the hearing Monday.

The young men told relatives that they were talking in a mixture of English and Arabic before the gunman shot them, according to a family spokeswoman. Relatives said they feared that the young men were targeted for being Arab Americans. The suspect answered the door, “stepped toward them with his palms up,” Mr. Murad said, and told the agents, “I’ve been waiting for you.”When the agents asked him why, Mr. Eaton requested a lawyer.
